Webcomics: Semi-Autobiographical Geeks
Categories: Comics
In my previous posts and reviews about my favourite webcomics, I have been basing them on common themes such as World of Warcraft, cuteness factor, humour and other factors. Seeing as I have quite a few comics that I love, I figure I should do a review of a few of the webcomics that are written in a somewhat autobiographical manner.
These webcomics are written by artists/writers that use their own lives to fuel their creative storylines. While some of the storylines are a little far fetched at times, the general theme or thread through the comic is related to their real life. On top of the semi-autobiographical content to these comics, they are all somewhat geeky comics to do with either art or technology. So right up my alley. Enjoy!
UnCubed: The Life and Times of an Indian Guy name Krishna
The first comic is called UnCubed and is written and drawn by Krishna Sadasivam. And yes, while you may be thinking his name is hard to pronounce, he is quite aware of that and made the first comic of the series about that very problem.
Krishna’s comic has everything from love, work, travel to the quirks of being artist. He doesn’t stray from real life it seems, and it pretty true to his own story.
This comic has followed along with Krishna meeting his wife, him having a baby, and all of life’s joys and frustrations. He even humorously covers Indian culture and explains certain questions that readers might have for him.
As the comic has progressed over the past 3 years, Krishna has kept the theme true, and has kept me laughing the entire time. If you want a nice happy webcomic, you got it right here.
Rating: 8.0/10 – Good clean writing, good art and I just like it.
PC Weenies: Tech Toons for Tech Enthusiasts. Since 1998
This comic follows along an imaginary character named Bob Weiner. Now while this isn’t exactly autobiographical, the artist for this is Krishna from the above Uncubed comic. He is formerly a computer geek and electrical engineer, therefore it seems that he is recounting a few tech related storylines within this comic.
Bob is employed a company name Footle… which oddly enough seems an awful lot like Google. This comic follows Bob’s life as a tech worker, along with his quirky family, including the grandfather who has recently “won a billion dollars from a internet email”. . . Yes, it is amusing and fun. Great for anyone who can appreciate technology and the trials and tribulations of working in the tech industry.
Have fun, it is a must read! A comic that brings up current tech issues will always have something amusing… He even makes fun of Steve Jobs on numerous occasions. While I am a fan of Apple, I can’t hide my amusement when he makes complete fun of Apple’s crazed fans!
One of my favourite things about this comic is that you can pay to have your very own character insert into the story line or for a “one-off” event. I figure, any comic artist willing to draw and add a character especially for a fan, is awesome in my books.
Rating: 8.5/10
Last but not least in my trio of webcomics today is the fantastic artwork of JefBot!
A semi-autobiographical comic about a comic artist/actor living in California. Now this comic not only makes me laugh most days, but it also has geeky undertones and overtones, and some loveable characters. Not too many people bring up the issues with going to auditions over and over again, and the odd things that might get said in them… even if it is by the person wanting the job…
Jefbot and his roommate Cornfather have many adventures, generally based on mostly real-life scenarios that they have had. From the worries of someone taking the plastic off of your brand new iPad, or to the necessity of wanting your friends to do something and their revenge is to have you dress up as Star Wars characters to a childrens birthday party. (Don’t blame me for making you think of Jar Jar Binx now – sorry!)
There is always something amusing to read in this comic, and it really makes me wonder sometimes what Jefbot and his roommate really must live like. So basically, between technology, geekery, goofiness and food, I think I’ve summed it up pretty well.
Rating: 8.5/10 – The artwork has greatly improved over the years, and he has really refined his techniques. I love the auto-biographical style, and really feel like Jefbot does a great job at getting the reader to know the characters.
